Gutters

22 Jul

People are complicated. There are endless expressions, ideas, emotions and personal experiences that color our behaviors and how we act and react to the world around us. No two people are exactly the same. We all have our own ideas about life and chart our own courses, making individual decisions that take us to various destinations and bring endless results. Two people can have the same exact experience and yet come away with entirely different perspectives. We may feel things intensely or be able to brush off what happens with little thought. We’re all different, and those differences bring great depth and richness to the world, but can also cause complications. If we’re not confident and disagree with those around us, we may hold our feelings in, and try to keep a low profile in an effort to prevent conflict or intense disagreement. That might work, but pretending we’re fine when we’re not, or going along with something we believe is wrong will eventually work against us. It’s like having clogged gutters on a house. They look fine from the outside and as long as the weather is nice there are no problems. But when a storm comes and the rain is intense, the water will not flow away and protect the house from flooding. Instead, it will build up and splash over the sides, soak the wood nearby and may cause great permanent damage. The same is true if we hold in how we really feel. We may look fine on the outside, but keeping our real thoughts to ourselves may cause us great stress and inner turmoil as we try to get through a difficult situation. It’s hard to feel good when we’re not being our true selves. Being open and allowing our honest opinions to flow will enable open communication and allow for greater understanding. We are entitled to our own opinions even if they’re different from those around us. We can be confident in expressing ourselves truthfully and making choices that reflect our own personal standards. Our input is important and the whole world is better because we are here.

It’s always easier to navigate through decisions if everyone is on the same page. When everyone agrees on the way forward, the road will be smoother than if there is dissent. When there is disagreement, the process may take longer and be more complex, but every idea has value. The simplest answer isn’t always the best in the long run, and a paved road will not always lead to the destinations we desire most. Allowing everyone to give their full and honest opinions about the choices ahead will open new doors and allow for alternative interpretations of every situation, shining a light on a completely new perspective.

Families and traditions are powerful influences in our lives. If we want to do something different from the way things have always been done in the past, we may face serious resistance and opposition. We may be pressured to just go along even if we disagree. We can always do anything we like, but pretending to be something we aren’t is like dealing with clogged gutters. Our true feelings may be held back for a time, but eventually we’ll need to express ourselves and be honest about who we are and what we want. Every expression has value and our contributions, even if different, are important. There is great satisfaction and happiness in being true to ourselves and living our lives openly and confidently.

Today if you don’t agree with what’s going on around you, speak up. Your voice is important and your feelings are worthwhile. Stand tall and show us who you are. You bring great richness and depth to the world and your contributions count. Be confident and honest. You are amazing and powerful. There is nobody like you in all of creation and nobody else can give the gifts you have to offer. You are precious and priceless, and we’re all blessed because you are here.

Making It Rock

16 Apr

Life is complex and since we don’t live in a vacuum there will likely be other people around us much of the time. When we’re closely connected to someone else, they may have suggestions about how they think we should live our lives and what we should be doing. It’s easier to nod and agree than to set out on our own, and in an effort to keep things even, we may simply go along. When we’re in a group and everyone is doing the same things, there may be pressure to conform. Following along may keep the peace, but it’s impossible to reach our own destinations by riding in the back seat. Most people feel comfortable when those around them are on the same page and doing the same things. It’s easy to fit in when you look like everyone else. Floating along downstream may be scenic and comfortable but sitting in someone else’s boat won’t take us where we want to go. The destinations we desire can only be reached if we step out on our own and begin toward them. Getting out of a boat is going to make it rock, and some may be unhappy because we’re upsetting the balance. “Why can’t you just sit still and go along” they may ask. Well, we could, but our lives are important, and all our dreams are waiting. When we’re ready to reach them, we can step away from the tide and set out on our own. Support from those close to us would be nice, but we don’t need it to design the way forward. We know what we want, and already possess everything we need to get it. By choosing what’s most important to us and moving toward the goals we most desire, we will gain great happiness and satisfaction. Every single dream is possible, and with conviction and determination, we will make them ours.

Blue is a beautiful color. It’s the color of the water and sky, and it’s pleasing to see. It’s lovely, but if everything we wore and everything we owned was blue, it would become tiresome and boring. Colors are enhanced when they’re accented by their opposites or those next to them on the spectrum. Differences bring depth and interest, and enrich our experiences. We never have to go along with all the “blues” if we want to be something else. Every color and every choice are possible, and we can paint our lives any way we desire.

Life is unpredictable and we never know what will happen next, but we can plan our way forward, moving toward the goals we most desire. Complications will likely come, problems may arise, and the road may get twisted and turned around, but we are intelligent and can find our way forward. Broken pavement doesn’t mean a final stop. We can step around what’s in the way and continue toward the goal. Every destination is possible, and we have all the wisdom and courage we need to reach them all.

Today think about what you want the most, and then take the first step toward the goal. You are amazing and your life is important. Every dream is possible, and you are powerful enough to make them yours. Decide what you want and begin toward the goal. Nothing is out of reach, every dream is waiting, and you have everything you need to succeed. Trust yourself and be confident. The whole world is there for you.

Incremental

1 Dec

Life is filled with challenges and new experiences. Every day may bring something we haven’t seen or heard before. We never know what will happen next. If we’re timid and feel unsure, we may try to avoid anything we aren’t familiar with. We can try to restrict our contact with others, and keep the exact same routine, hoping to protect ourselves from new developments and difficult situations. Restrictions may keep us from some situations but may also prevent us from achieving our goals. Limiting access in one area may end up limiting our access in others we need to reach success. If we want rich, fulfilling lives, we must be willing to face trouble and complications as they arise. Hiding out will never help us become the person we most want to be. Difficult issues will come, and the road may get complicated and twisted. We might have to face a whole myriad of problems, but we don’t have to face them all at once. We can take things slowly, and unravel the knots one at a time. We may not be able to solve everything at first, but as each issue is settled we’ll move closer to success. It may take a lot of time, and the changes may be incrementally small at first, but even tiny advances move us toward the goal. Small victories count. By moving forward line by line, and step by step, we will reach the destination. If we get stuck, we can step back and look at everything objectively. The answers we need will always be there for us, and with persistence and patience, we’ll find them. Every success is possible. If we keep moving forward, nothing can keep us from any goal we desire. We are strong and wise, and can be confident we will prevail.

Big, splashy successes are impressive. We all notice when someone accomplishes something huge that positively impacts everyone around them. But not all important accomplishments are broadcasted for everyone to see. We have private victories that may seem small in the overall scope of life, but that change our lives in positive and helpful ways. Each tiny success is important, and by building on them as we move forward, we will accomplish everything we desire.

Every change we make that moves us closer to our goals helps us reach success. If we want to be stronger, we don’t have to train for an Iron Man competition. We could just start exercising a little more each day. If we want to learn to cook, we don’t have to go to culinary school. We could just start reading a cookbook and try something easy. Incremental changes may seem insignificant, but each accomplishment, no matter how small, moves us toward success. We don’t have to start out being the ocean. We can begin as one drop of water, and move forward with confidence we will succeed.

Today if there’s something you want to accomplish but it looks too big and difficult, take one small step forward. Do one thing that moves you closer to the goal. Tomorrow, do another, and before long you’ll be well on your way to success. You are smarter and more powerful than you realize. Nothing is out of reach. You can do anything and go anywhere. Be confident. All your dreams are there for you, and you can make them come true.

The Frog

3 Jan

There is an old saying that if you want to cook a frog, put it in a pot of cold water and slowly heat it up.  It’s said that a frog will hop out of hot water but will sit in cold water and not notice the additional heat until it’s cooked.  If we’ve never wanted to cook a frog we may never need to test this hypothesis, but we may still experience the same process.  If someone wants us to do something they know we would never agree to, they may begin by including us in a situation we would find acceptable and then, slowly and carefully, modify the process until they reach their desired result.  Nobody is exempt from the deceit of others and there may be times when we may be shocked to find ourselves in situations we would never have chosen had we seen all the facts up front.  If we’re involved with someone we like or admire, and they slowly heat the water around us taking us where we don’t want to go, we may not notice anything until we’re metaphorically cooked.  We don’t know what we don’t know, and if we’re connected to someone who has secret plans, we may follow along until we end up in the wrong place.  It’s hard to believe anyone we care about and trust would do anything to mislead or deceive us, but it may happen.  When we finally see everything clearly we may feel like a fool wondering how we didn’t see the signs.  It’s easy to look back and see everything openly but if someone is blocking our vision it’s impossible to see the whole picture.  It’s like walking through fog.  Everything is muted and unclear, and even if we try we can’t see everything that is before us.  When the fog lifts it’s easy to look back at the path and see everything we missed.  In time all truth becomes evident.  Every deception will be uncovered and when it is, if we need to, we can correct our course.  We never have to continue on any road we don’t want.  We can turn and move forward toward success.

Shame is a very powerful emotion and can be quite destructive.  It may make us feel inadequate and unworthy.  We may feel intense shame if we discover we’ve fallen for a lie and taken our lives somewhere we don’t want to be.  We only answer for the choices we make and if we’ve been tricked into believing lies, the responsibility belongs to those who own them. If we find we’ve been fooled and manipulated, although we may be hurt, there is no need to feel ashamed.  It’s good to believe in and trust others.  If we are misled because of that belief and trust, those who have abused us are accountable.  We need not disparage ourselves for falling down.  We can stand tall, learn everything possible from the experience, and walk away with confidence knowing more than we did before.

Life is an incredible teacher if we are willing to listen. There are unlimited lessons to learn and everything we experience teaches us something new.  If we believe someone who lies to us, we may fall.  If we learn everything we can from the experience and take that information forward, remembering all the clues we learned, we will be more successful in preventing the same thing from happening again.  We don’t have to fall for the same story twice.  We can learn to feel the heat and step away before the water starts to boil.  Everything we need to be successful is already inside us.  We can watch, listen, and learn, and be wiser going forward.  Every possibility is available to us, and there isn’t anything we can’t comprehend and understand.

Today if you’ve discovered you’ve been tricked into a situation you don’t want, look ahead and decide how to correct your way forward.  A detour will never keep you from your goals.  You are wise and strong, and capable of understanding everything around you.  Keep your eyes on the road ahead and your path will become clear.  Every success you desire is waiting for you.  Nothing will hold you back and you will find the way.

One Tiny Seed

29 Jun

Seeds are amazing things. They carry within them great possibilities for growth and impact on their surroundings. Even very tiny seeds can produce large plants capable of creating fruits or vegetables, or hundreds and hundreds of blooms. It’s incredible to see them in their perfect small form and imagine what they will become. Of course, seeds don’t produce anything unless they are planted, watered and protected. They will sit dormant and all their potential will wait until they find a place to sprout and grow. All our ideas, dreams and plans for the future are like tiny seeds. We think about them and hold them close but until we begin to put them into action and do what is needed to make them a reality they will sit dormant. It’s fun to imagine what our lives may become and to think about our dreams coming true. We can hold onto our seeds for as long as we like. We can tuck them away safely and keep them to ourselves. If we want them to become real we must bring them forward and take the first steps toward making them grow. We have all the tools we need to accomplish anything we desire. There isn’t a dream we can’t work toward or a goal we can’t achieve but first we have to plant the seeds to allow them to grow. We can be confident in our ability to succeed at any task and overcome any hurdle that stands in our way. There really isn’t anything too daunting or difficult for us to manage. We have all the courage we need to proceed. All we have to do is begin and all our dreams can become reality.

We can spend years imagining what could be and where we could go. Dreaming is wonderful and it helps us define what we really want, but dreaming is like blowing feathers in the wind. They are delightful to see as they float upward but eventually they settle and fade. Until we begin to make our dreams come true they will always be out of reach, something nice to think about but nothing we can hold onto. We can change our imaginings into reality and accomplish anything we truly desire. When we stop dreaming about what could be and begin doing what is needed to make our dreams come true everything will come to us.

Some people spend their entire lives hoping for things to happen. If they are unhappy they hope something will change their situation. If they are bored they hope someone will come along to bring them excitement. Hope springs eternal and we may be filled with it but if we really want to change it’s up to us to make it happen. Hope is not action and action is the only thing that moves us forward. We can do what is needed to change our lives, we can plant our seeds and make all our hopes and dreams come true.

Today if you’ve been holding tight to a dream you really want to come true, begin doing what is needed to make it real. You can do anything you want and achieve anything you desire. Take action and begin moving forward. There isn’t anything too far away for you to reach. All your dreams can come true. Today take the first step and you’ll achieve everything you desire.
