The Frog

3 Jan

There is an old saying that if you want to cook a frog, put it in a pot of cold water and slowly heat it up.  It’s said that a frog will hop out of hot water but will sit in cold water and not notice the additional heat until it’s cooked.  If we’ve never wanted to cook a frog we may never need to test this hypothesis, but we may still experience the same process.  If someone wants us to do something they know we would never agree to, they may begin by including us in a situation we would find acceptable and then, slowly and carefully, modify the process until they reach their desired result.  Nobody is exempt from the deceit of others and there may be times when we may be shocked to find ourselves in situations we would never have chosen had we seen all the facts up front.  If we’re involved with someone we like or admire, and they slowly heat the water around us taking us where we don’t want to go, we may not notice anything until we’re metaphorically cooked.  We don’t know what we don’t know, and if we’re connected to someone who has secret plans, we may follow along until we end up in the wrong place.  It’s hard to believe anyone we care about and trust would do anything to mislead or deceive us, but it may happen.  When we finally see everything clearly we may feel like a fool wondering how we didn’t see the signs.  It’s easy to look back and see everything openly but if someone is blocking our vision it’s impossible to see the whole picture.  It’s like walking through fog.  Everything is muted and unclear, and even if we try we can’t see everything that is before us.  When the fog lifts it’s easy to look back at the path and see everything we missed.  In time all truth becomes evident.  Every deception will be uncovered and when it is, if we need to, we can correct our course.  We never have to continue on any road we don’t want.  We can turn and move forward toward success.

Shame is a very powerful emotion and can be quite destructive.  It may make us feel inadequate and unworthy.  We may feel intense shame if we discover we’ve fallen for a lie and taken our lives somewhere we don’t want to be.  We only answer for the choices we make and if we’ve been tricked into believing lies, the responsibility belongs to those who own them. If we find we’ve been fooled and manipulated, although we may be hurt, there is no need to feel ashamed.  It’s good to believe in and trust others.  If we are misled because of that belief and trust, those who have abused us are accountable.  We need not disparage ourselves for falling down.  We can stand tall, learn everything possible from the experience, and walk away with confidence knowing more than we did before.

Life is an incredible teacher if we are willing to listen. There are unlimited lessons to learn and everything we experience teaches us something new.  If we believe someone who lies to us, we may fall.  If we learn everything we can from the experience and take that information forward, remembering all the clues we learned, we will be more successful in preventing the same thing from happening again.  We don’t have to fall for the same story twice.  We can learn to feel the heat and step away before the water starts to boil.  Everything we need to be successful is already inside us.  We can watch, listen, and learn, and be wiser going forward.  Every possibility is available to us, and there isn’t anything we can’t comprehend and understand.

Today if you’ve discovered you’ve been tricked into a situation you don’t want, look ahead and decide how to correct your way forward.  A detour will never keep you from your goals.  You are wise and strong, and capable of understanding everything around you.  Keep your eyes on the road ahead and your path will become clear.  Every success you desire is waiting for you.  Nothing will hold you back and you will find the way.

One Tiny Seed

29 Jun

Seeds are amazing things. They carry within them great possibilities for growth and impact on their surroundings. Even very tiny seeds can produce large plants capable of creating fruits or vegetables, or hundreds and hundreds of blooms. It’s incredible to see them in their perfect small form and imagine what they will become. Of course, seeds don’t produce anything unless they are planted, watered and protected. They will sit dormant and all their potential will wait until they find a place to sprout and grow. All our ideas, dreams and plans for the future are like tiny seeds. We think about them and hold them close but until we begin to put them into action and do what is needed to make them a reality they will sit dormant. It’s fun to imagine what our lives may become and to think about our dreams coming true. We can hold onto our seeds for as long as we like. We can tuck them away safely and keep them to ourselves. If we want them to become real we must bring them forward and take the first steps toward making them grow. We have all the tools we need to accomplish anything we desire. There isn’t a dream we can’t work toward or a goal we can’t achieve but first we have to plant the seeds to allow them to grow. We can be confident in our ability to succeed at any task and overcome any hurdle that stands in our way. There really isn’t anything too daunting or difficult for us to manage. We have all the courage we need to proceed. All we have to do is begin and all our dreams can become reality.

We can spend years imagining what could be and where we could go. Dreaming is wonderful and it helps us define what we really want, but dreaming is like blowing feathers in the wind. They are delightful to see as they float upward but eventually they settle and fade. Until we begin to make our dreams come true they will always be out of reach, something nice to think about but nothing we can hold onto. We can change our imaginings into reality and accomplish anything we truly desire. When we stop dreaming about what could be and begin doing what is needed to make our dreams come true everything will come to us.

Some people spend their entire lives hoping for things to happen. If they are unhappy they hope something will change their situation. If they are bored they hope someone will come along to bring them excitement. Hope springs eternal and we may be filled with it but if we really want to change it’s up to us to make it happen. Hope is not action and action is the only thing that moves us forward. We can do what is needed to change our lives, we can plant our seeds and make all our hopes and dreams come true.

Today if you’ve been holding tight to a dream you really want to come true, begin doing what is needed to make it real. You can do anything you want and achieve anything you desire. Take action and begin moving forward. There isn’t anything too far away for you to reach. All your dreams can come true. Today take the first step and you’ll achieve everything you desire.

People are complicated. They don’t always show us everything they are or what they can do. We all have things we keep to ourselves and some of us hold our cards closer to our chests than others. Sometimes we’re shy, sometimes we don’t have enough confidence to open all our doors, and sometimes we prefer to keep things private. Because we can’t know everything behind the scenes we often make judgments based on what we can see. We don’t know that man at work who dresses funny is an excellent painter who does stunning abstracts. Or that woman at church who is always so aloof spends two days a week teaching reading to underprivileged children. Or our grouchy old neighbor is an accomplished musician who traveled the world performing. If we don’t take any time to know others, all we see is what’s on the surface of those around us. We can’t know what’s beneath the obvious unless we take the time to find out. Saying hello in passing and making judgments based on what’s obvious will only give us part of the story. This world can be a lonely place and it’s hard to feel connected when nobody really knows who we are. We can bring happiness and comfort by asking and letting others share themselves with us. As we get to know each other better we can build understanding and bring unity to our world.

If you’ve ever gone snorkeling in the ocean, you’ve seen some of the different and wonderful things that exist below the surface. It’s a far different world below than it seems when we look out onto the water. The surface may be beautiful but all we can see is the very top of what’s there. Under the water there are countless types of fish, plants, corals and other things that are amazing in their diversity and scope. One could never imagine what is beneath the water by looking only at the surface. It’s the same with us. We can only see what’s on the outside of those around us. We know what they look like and how they react in a limited environment. If we really want to know who they are, we have to dive deeper and spend some time getting to know what’s below the surface.

Some people are very private and it takes a while to get to know them. They have their own reasons for why they keep to themselves, but if we engage them and show we are their friends and can be trusted, they will open up to us and reveal more of who they are. And when they do we’ll be embellished by learning more about them and the connections between us will strengthen. We may forge a bond of trust and respect that wasn’t there before. The whole human race is our family. We belong to it and it belongs to us. Learning about each other helps us understand more and feel closer as we move forward.

Today if you’ve been keeping to yourself and not showing the world who you really are, take a chance and open up. If there is someone you would like to know better, engage them and let them show you who they are. We all have so much to offer. Today share yourself and let others tell you about their lives as well. You’ll feel closer and more connected and your world will expand.
