Now What

9 Oct

We go through a lot of adjustments and developments in our lives. Nothing lasts forever and change is constant. If we’ve been working toward a big goal for a long time – a college degree, a promotion at work, a project that has required lots of time and energy – we get used to the demands it places on us and work our lives around what needs to be done. But eventually everything reaches a conclusion, and when we’ve accomplished what we set forth to do and everything has settled, there may be a lull while we try to figure out what’s next. When we’ve been so focused on one thing for a long time and we finally finish it, there will be a great sense of accomplishment but then the next day arrives and everything is different. Life is filled with opportunities and chances to do anything we like, but before we can start, we have to decide how we want to proceed. It sounds easy, and sometimes it is and we move on to what we want next. However, other times we may have no idea what our next steps should be. When we’ve been focused on one thing for a long time and that’s over, we may feel like there’s a hole in our lives. We want to fill it, but may have no idea how or with what. Now what? We know there are lots of options we can choose. We can take our time and think about what we want to do. Life is a journey made of endless destinations. By choosing where we want to go next, we can start forward and open new doors and find new experiences that will enrich us and move us ahead. Learning never ends and we can go anywhere and do anything we desire. We can push toward what we dream about and make it ours. Nothing is out of reach and we can have the lives we want.

Variety brings great interest into our lives. Having lots of different choices before us enables us to design our days any way we like. There will always be endless opportunities, but unlimited possibilities can make it hard to choose. We could do this, or do that, go this way, or turn around and go the other. Before we choose anything, we must first decide what we want and where we want to end up. Once that’s settled, we will more easily be able to plan the way forward, and find success.

Sometimes after achieving a great accomplishment we’ve worked hard for, there may be a lull in our thinking. We may want to stand still for a time before we begin something new. Big changes take time to adjust to. There is no rush to push forward. We can take the time we need to understand where we are, and then choose how we want to proceed. Our lives belong to us and we can design them any way we like. We don’t have to hurry to decide what we want next. Every goal is possible, and when we’re ready, we will achieve them.

Today if you’ve finally completed a big project or accomplished something you’ve pushed hard for, be happy in your success. Take the time you need to think about what you want to do. You don’t have to rush into the next project. Every option is there for you and will wait until you’re ready to begin. You are amazing and powerful, and nothing is out of reach. Enjoy this moment. Every success is waiting and when you’re ready, you will reach it.

Disappointment and Perseverance

2 Jan

“I long so much to make beautiful things. But beautiful things require effort—and disappointment and perseverance.” Vincent van Gogh

We have a lot of challenges in our lives and many things we want to accomplish. We can strive for any goal we want to attain but often the road to success isn’t smooth. There may be points where we stumble or get lost, there may be obstacles in our path, and it can be disappointing when we feel like we’re working hard but not getting any closer. Sometimes it may seem that no matter how much we plan or how carefully we proceed we run into something that blocks our way forward. As time passes we may get frustrated feeling we should have conquered the challenge by now and yet we are still trying. It takes continual effort to reach any destination and if we want to succeed we must persevere when things go wrong. We have to figure out the problems that block our path, and find a way to navigate around the obstacles in our way. We may get tired and even think of letting go of the goal but if we want to achieve anything we must be willing to do what it takes to get there. Everything we desire requires effort and often things don’t go as easily as we hope they will. But there isn’t anything we can’t overcome and we are capable of finding success. There may be disappointment but we can manage that and persevere through it to the other side. We can decide to continue forward even when the road gets rough.

We are complex and capable of accomplishing many difficult things in our lives if we determine to stay the course until we complete the journey. If we are overcome with disappointment, we may feel overwhelmed and unsure we can go on. At times like those, we may set the goal aside for a while and return to it later when our lives are in a different place. There isn’t any goal we can’t achieve but sometimes timing is everything. If something isn’t working now, we can proceed with other things for a while and try again later. As our lives change and our situations adjust we may be in a better position to begin again.

When we’ve been working toward a goal for a long time and are struggling, we may believe we will never win. We may think it’s just not in the cards for us and let it go. We can always re-direct our course but instead of giving up sometimes all we need to do is change direction. We may only need to adjust our path a little to find success. Life is rarely an “all or nothing” situation. Generally, there are lots of variations and if what we’ve been doing isn’t working, we can modify and change our focus a little to find success. There really isn’t anything we can’t do.

Today if you’ve been working hard toward a goal you want to achieve and still haven’t moved forward, step back and rethink the situation. Think about how you might adjust your path forward to find success. You will reach your goal and find your way. You have everything you need to be successful and there is no disappointment you can’t overcome.

Snowflakes

26 Aug

The first snow of the winter season is magical. It’s exciting to see the beautiful white blanket as it begins to cover every surface. If we go outside we may see snowflakes as they land on our coats, and marvel at the unique design, and loveliness of each one. It’s amazing to see each flake perfectly formed and different. There are no two flakes the same, but they are all snow. They share the same molecular structure, but their outward designs are completely different. We’re the same way. We are all different but we are all people. We all share the same basic human structure, but our appearances and everything else about us is unique and different.

If you live on one side of the world you may look a certain way. Your skin, your hair, and your eyes may share a commonality with others in your region. But if you fly to the other side of the world, you may be the only one who looks like you. There is endless variety in the human race.  Even identical twins aren’t completely identical. There are subtle differences in their appearances, and certainly differences in their personalities. Every single one of us is a unique work of art. We are one of a kind. There has never been, nor will there ever be, anyone else exactly like us.

Although there are a lot of outward differences, as part of the human race, there are things we all share. We all need to breathe, we need to eat, and we want to love and be loved. In every culture we love our families, and we want to be safe and happy. We may not look alike, we may not speak the same language or share the same customs, but we do share the human experience. No matter where we go, a smile is welcome, and sadness needs comfort. Like snowflakes, we are all different, but we are made of the same things. We are all part of the human family, and we’re all in this together. If we remember that when our differences get in the way, we may more easily find common ground and work things out.

Today, remember that like a snowflake, you are wonderful and unique just as you are. You’re an individual with your own exceptional talents and gifts, and you are part of a huge family. We are all connected in more ways than we realize. Our connections to each other are important, they are valuable, and they matter. Honor them.  We’re all together here for a purpose.  Remember that when problems come up, and think about the connections you have to those around you instead of the differences.
