Who We Are

5 Oct

When people ask who we are we may give them descriptions of our lives. We are siblings, children, parents, grandparents, friends, co-workers, professionals, laborers and dozens of others. All of these representations help people understand us and our place in life but they don’t really define who we are. They are merely what circumstances we were born into or where we are in our lives. Who we are goes far deeper than any outward descriptor. It’s what defines us morally, ethically, spiritually, and individually, and is reflected by the actions we take. Our true selves are defined by the choices we make and the values we express. It has little to do with what others expect and more to do with what we expect from ourselves. We set our own personal standards and how we define what is noble and good is reflected in the people we become. We can bring goodness and light to the world or we can bring trouble and conflict. We can be anything we choose and everything we do will show the world what those decisions are. There are endless opportunities in life to make an impact. What that impact looks like is our decision. We can bring joy or sorrow. It’s all up to us.

Most people try to do well and be kind to those around them. We see incredible acts of goodness when trouble strikes as people step up to assist and carry those around them. We hear of heroic acts that save lives and incredible sacrifice that brings comfort. When others give selflessly to those around them it embellishes us and gives us hope for the future. Those willing to give bring great blessings to us all. Our connections to the human race are strong and more valuable than we may realize until things go wrong. We can choose to be noble and kind. We can be a light when there is nothing but darkness and the hand that reaches up when things go wrong.

Personal nobility is a choice we make. It’s easy to coast through life doing the minimum needed to get by. We can keep our eyes only on ourselves and our personal needs and refuse to get involved in anything outside our private world. If we do, we may feel safer in our routines and secure knowing what to expect. But if we take the chance to reach out and help others, and risk our personal comfort to extend ourselves in service, our lives will be enriched and we will become more connected to those around us. We can be anything we choose. Choosing to be noble and kind, selfless and loving, and helpful and charitable, will bring us incredible blessings and enrich our lives beyond our imagining. We have so much to offer. We can be the very best versions of ourselves and bless the world.

Today if you’ve been keeping to yourself, think about sharing your life with others. Look up. There are opportunities to help and serve all around you. Reach out and expand your focus. There is greatness and nobility inside you. Build on it and let it grow. You have so much to offer. Be the best you can be and you’ll change the world.

Pointed Ahead

18 Aug

There are endless choices we can make about where we’ll go in our lives.  We can do what our families think we should, we can make choices based on our friends’ suggestions, or we can decide on our own where we want to go.  There are limitless opportunities and choices we can make and we may customize our lives any way we choose.  Before we begin, the first step is to decide where we want to go.  Important decisions take time and careful consideration and if we are undecided and begin walking forward unsure of where we’re headed we may end up somewhere we don’t want or even walking in circles.  Starting on a journey without a defined destination will not help us achieve anything we desire.  Being busy doesn’t always mean being productive and wandering around in circles may keep us moving but it will get us nowhere.  Before we start moving we must choose a destination and then plan our steps forward to reach the goal.  When our feet are pointed ahead in the direction we desire we have a good chance of reaching our goals.  We can go anywhere but first we must decide exactly what destination we desire.  We already know what we want most and have all the courage and wisdom needed to achieve anything.  There isn’t anything we can’t do and no place we can’t go.  Choosing carefully will help us find success.  Everything is available to us once we decide we will do what it takes to get it.  Every choice is ours to make.  We can choose what we want most and point our feet in the direction needed to achieve it.

It’s easy to coast through life going here and there with no destination in mind.  It’s easy to go with the flow of other people’s decisions and play along even if the goal isn’t something we really want.  But going along and simply taking things as they come will never help us get to the destinations we want most.  We can do anything but we must take control of our time and decisions and move forward toward our goal with determination.  Happiness comes from living our lives on purpose and choosing our own way forward.  We can accomplish anything we desire and begin forward on the road that will take us to success.

Everyone has their own ideas about life and what is best.  What is right for others may not be what we want.  We don’t have to conform to anyone’s suggestions about our future and we can determine our way forward on our own.  We know what we want to accomplish, we know where we want to go, and we know how to find success.  Being true to our sincere desires will bring us happiness as we move forward on the road that is genuinely ours.  Each day we choose what is best for us will take us one step closer to success and real happiness.

Today if you want to change direction from the road you’ve been on but there is pressure to stay on course, remember your life is yours to design.  You can go anywhere you want.  Point your feet in the direction you desire and begin forward.  There isn’t anything you can’t do and every step with take you closer to the life you want most.  This is your day.  Move forward with confidence.  It’s all there for you.

The Ladder

6 Jun

Ambition is putting a ladder against the sky.  American Proverb
When we want something we don’t have or want to achieve something higher than where we are we have ambition.  We believe we can do what is needed to succeed and set our sights on the goal.  Ambition is greater than hope because we put effort into gaining the achievement.  Having ambition is like climbing a ladder.  When we need to reach something higher than where we are we can use a ladder.  We lean it against something sturdy and safely climb higher to reach the goal.  Ambition is like setting a ladder against the sky.  The sky has no end and there is no limit to what we can achieve.  Having ambition allows us to dream of something more, something higher or greater.  It enables us to stretch further and see how far we can go.  We can try to reach anything we want.  We can push ourselves to become more, and when we do we learn more about who we are and discover what we’re capable of.  We can do anything.  We can set the ladder against the sky and scale it as high as we like.

Anything worth having is worth working for.  Nothing of value comes to us without effort.  If we stand still and coast through our lives, we will never achieve our full potential.  We are capable of doing more than we believe we can but we won’t find our real limits unless we push forward.  If we want to we can simply coast through our lives.  Coasting is effortless movement.  It might take us in the direction we want to go but it’s susceptible to the winds of change and the decisions of others.  If we do nothing to direct our course and simply allow life to carry us, we will go places but they may not be the places we want to be.  And because there is no effort we won’t become stronger.  When we have no rudder we can’t steer our ship or choose a destination.  If we allow ourselves to simply be driven by all the forces around us, we have no idea where we’ll end up.

Our lives belong to us.  They are ours and ours alone.  It doesn’t matter what other people think we should be doing.  What matters is what we choose to do.  Choosing to do nothing is a choice we can make if we want to.  But we only get one shot at this life and wasting even one day is a loss we can never recover.  We know what we want our lives to be like.  We know what we want.  We have the power to aim high and achieve anything we like.  We can direct our course to the destinations we choose and we can turn our ship at any time.  If we anchor our progression with effort and planning we can succeed.  There isn’t anything we can’t do.  Every dream can become a reality if we do what it takes to achieve it.

Today if there is something you want to gain, someplace you want to go, or something you want to achieve, set your sights on the goal and begin moving toward it.  You have all the ambition and drive you need to make it yours.  Start moving toward the destination and soon you’ll see it just ahead.  There isn’t anything you can’t do.  Set your ladder and start climbing.
