If we hurt our lower extremities and can’t put weight on them, we may use crutches to help us keep moving. They take the weight off the injured limb and help us continue to move forward despite the complication. It’s not easy to walk on crutches, but eventually, as we get used to them, we appreciate the support they give us so we can continue on. Crutches are helpful when we need them but once things have healed and we’re able to set them down, we can learn to walk again without them, and start over. In our personal lives, there may be times when we feel weak and unsure, and want an emotional crutch to help us through. Maybe we lean on those around us and rely on their judgement, or we step back and sit out important decisions because we don’t feel brave enough to participate. Whatever the reason, if we lack confidence, we may rely on the crutches around us to get through. There’s nothing wrong with leaning on something strong for support during times of duress, but if we make it our pattern and let go of our autonomy out of fear or worry, we may forget how capable and strong we really are. We have everything we need to do anything we like, and when we step forward, every answer will be available. We can depend on others to cover for us, and that might work for a while, but nobody knows what we need or what we want better than we do. Even if we’re unsure, we can make good decisions and take a step forward. We can go slowly and take each turn cautiously until we feel confident. The road ahead is there for us and we can find our way to the destinations we desire. Nothing is out of reach and success is always possible.

Facing a big hill on the road ahead can be daunting. The closer we get, the larger it seems, and at the bottom it can appear overwhelming and unattainable. It’s impossible to overcome a huge obstacle all at once, but we can take the first step forward, and then take another. It doesn’t matter how tall or wide the hurdle is, we can conquer it by taking each step forward. Inch by inch we’ll get closer to the goal, and if we persist, will reach our destination.

Strength comes from resistance. Every time we overcome a difficult situation, we gain greater wisdom and strength to carry forward. If we rely on others to hold us up and manage our struggles, we may get through them, but we won’t gain the blessings possible by managing them on our own. It’s good to get help when we need it, but we are wiser and more capable than we realize. Nothing is too difficult for us to manage and we can proceed with confidence that we will find the answers we need.

Today if you’ve been relying on others to get you through a complicated situation and don’t feel strong enough to manage things on your own, have faith and trust yourself. You have everything you need to handle any complications that may come. You are strong and wise, and can accomplish anything you desire. Step forward with courage and be confident. Nothing is out of reach. Stand strong and proceed with determination. Every answer is there for you and you will prevail.

“We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world.”  Helen Keller

Life is filled with ups and downs, successes and failures, joy and disappointment and endless diverse experiences.  Nobody wants to suffer needlessly and we may imagine we would be happiest if our lives always went well and nothing ever failed.  It’s easy to be happy when things go the way we want them to and we have enough of everything we need.  But life is all about learning and it’s impossible to understand what true happiness is if we never struggle.  Joy is defined as the absence of sorrow.  In order to truly feel joy we must have some understanding of what it’s like to feel sorrow.  There would be no reason to be courageous if everything was easy and no need to be patient if all we wanted was immediately provided, but that is rarely the case.  We have the opportunity to experience disappointments and challenges that teach us new ways to see things and help us understand ourselves and the world.  Every obstacle has something to teach us and as we push forward we learn everything we need to find success and true happiness.  Life isn’t always easy but it is always precious and every single day, no matter what we face, is a gift.  We have everything we need to understand what is required to continue forward and we can overcome any problem or complication we face.  Each day we persevere we become stronger and wiser, and gain a better understanding of who we are and how to live happily.

We are strong and capable and even during times of serious struggle and challenge we can find a way through.  We can exercise patience and take problems apart piece by piece until we figure out how to proceed.  If the situation is very difficult we can take our time to discern what needs to be done.  Every turn and challenge teaches us something new and all the skills we learn stay with us.  We may draw on all the lessons we conquer as we move ahead.  There isn’t anything we can’t do and nothing we can’t overcome.  Taking our time and being confident will help us solve any issue before us and move us forward successfully.

We may dream of a perfect life where everything is easy and we have all we want and need.  But life is messy, there are other people making decisions that may affect us, there is traffic, bad weather, and countless other things that complicate our vision of a perfect existence.  It’s good to learn new things and test our strength and courage.  We can learn to be patient while we wait and endure while we struggle.  Testing our courage will bring us confidence and overcoming trials will bring us joy.  Life is a great blessing and we have everything we need to live successfully.

Today if you wish a problem before you would simply disappear, you have everything you need to navigate through and find joy.  You are strong and capable and nothing is too difficult for you to overcome.  Learn all you can and go forward with confidence.

When I was a child our family spent several weeks one summer on an island off the coast of North Carolina.  The beach was beautiful, and I would play in the surf but only up to my knees.  I was afraid of the waves and watched the water very carefully.  When the tide came in the waves would get quite large and one day my sister and I were playing in the sand too close to the water, and a wave washed over us and dragged us away from the shore.  We didn’t go far and our father grabbed us and pulled us back.  I was quite terrified, certain we were going to die, and seeing my distress, after that day he began to teach me about the waves.  He told me they were safe but I needed to learn how to manage them.  He took me into the water when the waves were small and taught me that if I planned for them, I would be fine.  Each day we went into the water and as the waves got bigger and bigger, and I got scared, my father encouraged me to be confident and told me I could manage whatever came.  Day by day my confidence grew as I learned about the water, and before long I was body surfing and hoping for bigger and bigger waves.

When we are facing new things we may feel unsure.  Because we haven’t managed the parameters of the new situation before, it may be daunting or even frightening.  We may lack confidence in our ability to do it.  When we’re facing new processes or experiences we’re sometimes hesitant going forward.  But we can prepare by taking small steps.  If we put our feet in just a little, and try doing a small part first and get comfortable, we can then move forward.   It’s like conquering the small waves.  If we take it step by step we will gain confidence and manage the project, whatever it is.

A man I know called me once some time ago expressing his concern over an assignment to teach a course.  He was convinced he couldn’t do it, and sure he would faint or be struck dumb in front of the participants.  He was well educated and generally interacted with others quite easily but he was terrified about being the center of attention.  We talked about it and he decided to practice with friends before the event.  He had several practice sessions, each going more easily than the previous one, and when it was time for his presentation he did well.  He conquered the small waves over and over and when the big wave came he was ready.  Success is often just about preparation.  We can do anything if we have the courage to face it and the will to conquer it.

Today if you’re facing something new that is giving you pause, and if you are uncertain about going forward, take one small step toward the goal.  Do one small thing to start the learning process and conquer that.  Tomorrow do another and keep moving forward until you feel confident and sure.  You can do anything you want.  You can learn and you can grow.  Take it one small wave at a time and soon you’ll be in the front of the line showing others how it’s done.
