Getting Back in the Pool

25 Jan

Life is filled with opportunities. It is also filled with challenges. When we’re trying hard to move forward toward a goal, or pushing to change something in our lives, we may exert a lot of energy in time and effort. It’s easy to keep moving when the road ahead is clear and we’re making good progress. When we’re successful in moving the ball forward, there is great satisfaction and we feel energized. Unfortunately, that will not always be the case. Sometimes it seems no matter what we do, how clearly we focus, or how hard we try, nothing changes and we’re still in the same place. It can be maddening to try hard and feel like we’re going nowhere. If we get stuck we can look at everything objectively and decide how we want to continue. Do we want to keep pushing, or do we want to stop? Timing is important, and if we’re stuck and tired of the struggle, we can set the goal aside until our situation changes. Setting something aside isn’t the same as abandoning it forever. We can change anything at any time and we never have to keep doing something we don’t want. Taking the time to consider all the options before us and determine what we want the most will help us decide what to do next. Once we decide how we want to proceed, we can plan our steps forward and continue on toward success.

If we want to learn to swim, the first time we step into the pool, the water may seem dangerous and deep. In our initial attempt to swim across the length we may gasp for air as we try to keep from going under. If we get overwhelmed, we may climb out, convinced we’re going to drown, and decide we’re done. But if we really want to learn to swim, we have to get back in the pool, and push forward. It’s the same with anything new we’re trying to learn. The first steps aren’t always easy and we may face a setback at the beginning, but the goal will always be possible if we’re willing to keep going. Each step forward will take us closer to the destination, and with persistence and focus, we will prevail.

It’s impossible to see the end of any road from the beginning. When we’re starting toward a new goal, we may make an excellent plan for moving forward, but there is no way to know what will happen, what unexpected complications will arise, or how things will go. Trouble may come, problems may get in the way, there may be a detour or some delay we didn’t see coming, and a thousand other possibilities. Success will always be possible, but we may have to change the way we get to it. By being flexible and trusting ourselves to overcome whatever happens, we can be confident we will win.

Today if you’ve been pushing toward a goal but it’s still beyond your reach, decide how you want to proceed. You are wise and capable, and can accomplish anything you desire. Plan your next steps and be confident of success. Nothing is powerful enough to hold you in place indefinitely, and with persistence and focus, every dream will be yours.
