Life Sentence

10 Aug

Life is a continual process of learning. Every step we take and every decision we make teaches us something. Although we may try to make the best choices possible, sometimes important details are disguised or we may be distracted and choose something that turns out badly. There is no way to know everything and we all make mistakes from time to time. If we’ve made a choice that has had terrible results we may need to work hard to fix it. Bad decisions happen and if they are extreme we may feel we’ve ruined our lives. We may be sure there is no way to repair the situation and we are lost, but everything is transient and nothing is permanent. There is no life sentence pronounced upon us when we fail. We aren’t doomed to remain in pain and anguish forever. It’s just a mistake. Even if it feels like a terminal disaster, it’s just a mistake. And mistakes can be amended. We can figure out what is needed to correct our course going forward and find the right road. If others have been hurt by our decision we can do what is required to apologize and turn things around. Nobody is perfect and there is no guide book to warn us before we make decisions. We will often choose wisely and generally find our way, and if we stumble we can adjust our direction ahead and start again. Life is all about learning. We learn everything we need to know as we move along. Detours may happen and we may falter, but we are capable of regaining our footing and continuing forward to success.

If we make a bad decision that impacts a personal relationship in serious ways there may be long lasting consequences. If the damage is great we may lose the connection with the other person completely. They may choose to walk away from us and leave us behind. We can try to repair the situation but we cannot make anyone continue forward with us against their will. We can learn as much as possible from the experience and take that information forward to help us in the future. Sometimes things break and can’t be repaired but we can remain open to starting again if the opportunity comes.

We are free to choose anything we like but we cannot control the results of those choices. Sometimes things will go exactly as planned and other times they may work against us. Learning to see things openly and objectively, and being willing to look at all sides of every problem will enable us to make the best choices. We are capable of making excellent decisions and have everything we need to succeed. We can trust in our ability to choose wisely and if things go awry, we can choose again to correct our way forward.

Today if you’ve made a bad decision and have caused yourself or others pain or discomfort, look at the issue completely. See the best options going forward and choose the path that will correct your course. You are intelligent and wise, and can do amazing things. The road to success is there for you. Seek it, and find it. There isn’t anything you can’t do and do well. You have everything you need right now to succeed.

Setting it Back

10 Jul

As we direct our lives forward sometimes we suffer setbacks that move us backward or hold us in place.  They may involve others who have a different idea of what we should be doing or unforeseen circumstances or developments that stop us in our tracks.  Setbacks are never in our plans and when they happen all we may see is the time we’re losing as we try to correct our course.  It’s irritating when something stands in our way going forward but setbacks are not just complications.  They are also opportunities to stop and review the plans we’ve made and look at options going forward.  Every problem brings with it an opportunity to learn.  If we maximize those opportunities and learn as much as possible we will find the way forward and carry with us all the information we gain.  No matter how much we know about anything we can’t know everything.  A setback is merely a pause in our progress that gives us time to look again.  While we’re standing still we can review our plans and explore new options.  We may find a different perspective that opens new arenas we had not previously considered.  There isn’t anything that can stop us from reaching our goals.  No matter what detours or diversions arise we can find the way to success.

Big plans often have many moving parts.  We may need to fully accomplish one step before we can move to the next.  If it takes a long time or the journey is complicated and difficult we may tire of the struggle and get burned out.  If we need a break we can take one.  Sometimes stepping back for a short time and gaining a fresh view allows us to find ways to move forward more quickly and efficiently.  If we get mired down in our efforts we may develop tunnel vision only being able to see one road ahead.  But there are many roads that lead to every destination.  If we step back and set the goal aside for a moment we may more easily see other options available to us and find a clearer path going forward.

There is no required timeline for most of the goals we want to achieve.  We can set our own schedule and work around the other parameters of our lives.  If we must step away from a goal for a time in order to focus on more pressing situations we can set it back and then pick it up again when the time is right.  There is no need to pressure ourselves to accomplish anything too quickly.  We can make plans that fit into our lives without compromising the other responsibilities we must care for.  There really isn’t anything we can’t accomplish.  We are capable and wise and can move forward in exactly the best way.

Today if you’ve been pushing hard to reach a goal and have suffered a setback and are stuck, use the time to see the whole picture.  Let all the options present themselves and you’ll find the next step.  You are smarter than you think and there isn’t anything you can’t do.  Look around.  The road is there for you and you will find it.  Success is just ahead.

Not Stopping

20 Jun

There are a lot of things going on in our lives all the time. We have responsibilities we must attend to, things we have to get done, commitments we need to keep and endless details to address. In the midst of all this we also have our personal goals and dreams we want to pursue. It can be hard to keep our focus on everything and still find time to do the things we really want to accomplish. It’s frustrating to want something badly and feel like we’re stuck because of other things in the way. The journey can get muddled and we may lose our confidence that we’ll ever get to the destination. We may have to move slowly and we may face detours and roadblocks but if we keep taking another step forward we will get closer to the goal. The only time we are destined to fail is if we stop. Stopping the journey will guarantee we won’t arrive at the destination. We can take a break if we need to but that doesn’t mean we stop altogether. If we’re on a road trip and stop for gas we don’t stay and move into the gas station forever. We take care of what is needed and continue on. The same is true in our personal lives. We may have to stop momentarily but as soon as we’re ready we may continue forward again. Not stopping is the only way to reach any goal. Persistence is the most powerful attribute we possess and will help us achieve anything. We can face what comes and overcome any obstacle if we are motivated enough. There isn’t anything we can’t achieve.

There are a lot of interesting and intriguing things in the world. We may come upon a detour that captures our attention. If it draws us aside and captivates us we may take a step off the road forward. There is nothing wrong with taking a break from the journey but we may find that time passes and we’ve spent it doing things that have kept us in place. If we’ve decided we no longer want to pursue the goal we may change our focus but if we still want to continue forward we can redirect our attention and begin again.

We can do anything we want with our lives. They belong to us and we may design them and take them anywhere we want to go. We all have dreams and goals we want to accomplish but they will never come to us without effort. If we sit back and simply enjoy things as they are they will remain the same. We may be content to do nothing but if we want to achieve something new we must go forward to get there. We have everything we need to do anything we want. We can progress with confidence and stay on the course until we reach the destination.

Today if you’ve been distracted by all the things going on in your life and haven’t moved closer your goal, make a plan to move forward and re-direct your path. You can achieve anything you desire. You are smarter and stronger than you imagine. Be determined and move forward with confidence. There isn’t anything you can’t achieve. All your dreams are waiting for you and you will make them come true.

Grape Juice

1 Jul

Grape juice is delicious.  It’s sweet and tasty and very refreshing.  But if we spill it on our white cotton shirt, it’s quickly changes from being a treat to being a curse.  Grape juice is nice to drink but spilled on white cotton can create an indelible stain that is nearly impossible to remove.  It leaves evidence, sometimes forever, that it was there.  We may scrub and try all kinds of applications and still the stain may remain.  In our lives when we make a mistake that hurts us or others deeply we may feel like we’ve created a permanent stain.  There is no way to change what has happened, and we might believe there is no way to recover from the decision.  Thankfully, even if the mistake is damaging and difficult, it’s not like grape juice.  It’s not forever.  There isn’t anything we can’t recover from.  We all make mistakes and if we’ve really blundered and seriously caused pain to ourselves or others it may be difficult to repair the damage.  But we can face difficult challenges and find our way through them.  If we seriously want to make things right again and do what is needed to correct the problem, we can navigate it effectively and move forward.  What we learn from the experience will be valuable, and even if there is some residual stain that stays with us, it will never be so intense that we can’t find a way around it.

We make dozens of decisions every day.  Our lives change continually based on those decisions and the decisions of others.  Sometimes things go well, we can clearly see the path forward, and know what to do.  Other times our vision may be clouded with indecision, confusion or complications out of our control.  Even if we try to make the best decisions possible, sometimes we won’t have all the information, or what we have is incorrect.  As we go forward we may stumble and take a wrong turn and get hurt, and we may fall on others and hurt them as well.  Nobody wants to make bad choices on purpose.  We try to do our best but it’s possible to get lost.  Getting lost doesn’t mean we’re lost forever.  It just means we took a wrong turn.  We are perfectly capable of assessing the situation, looking at our options, and choosing the road that will correct our course and get us back on track to where we want to go.  We can keep moving forward even after a serious detour.  We have everything we need to find our way again, and we can get to the destination successfully.

If we make a bad choice that is so egregious we break a connection to someone else, we may have to go forward without them for a while.  If no matter what we’ve tried to repair the relationship they don’t want any association with us, we may accept that for now and still move forward.  We can’t control decisions made by anyone but ourselves.  We can give them time and distance if they need it and do whatever we can to make things right.  Everyone makes mistakes and although some may take time to recover from, we are capable of correcting our course at any time.

Today if you’re recovering from a mistake in judgment, and you feel like you’re stained forever, remember this is not permanent. You can correct your course and make things right again.  Keep moving forward.  You have everything you need to succeed.

Strong as Steel

15 Mar

When things are going well and we feel confident, life seems easy and we can face whatever comes. We feel strong and capable, and aware of our many abilities. People seem friendlier and our lives are comfortable and easy. Unfortunately, those times don’t last forever and eventually something goes wrong. If something goes very wrong and we are knocked down, in our sudden despair we may think we can’t manage things. We may forget how capable we are. When we think of steel we think of how hard and strong it is. But it doesn’t start out that way. It starts with rock that is ground and crushed, and then it’s heated to temperatures near 3000 degrees. There are several steps before the raw ore becomes the finished metal we’re familiar with, and each step is crucial. At the end, because of all the grinding and heating and tempering, we end up with something that is very strong and very hard. In our lives we will face challenges and trials, and as we navigate them, we go through a refining process as well. Each challenge we overcome makes us stronger and more resilient. Nobody wants to go through hard times, but just like making steel, the crushing disappointments, and heat of distress make us strong. With each trial, we burn off more behaviors that hold us back and we get closer to where we want to be. It isn’t comfortable to struggle but as we become stronger the trials become easier. We can be as strong as steel but we have to go through the fire to get there.

When things go wrong we have choices to make. Some people refuse to see problems in their lives. They ignore them, look the other way, talk around them, and don’t acknowledge them. They may hope the problem will work itself out, and some problems actually do. But generally when something needs to be addressed and we ignore it, it simply lies dormant waiting for us. Most problems don’t just go away on their own. If we don’t have the courage to face them when they appear, they will wait until we do. They will cling to us and hold us back from moving forward. Pretending they don’t exist doesn’t help. It’s like pretending the sun isn’t in the sky when it’s shining down on us.

It’s best to face our trials when they arrive, look at them, figure out what to do, and solve them. If they are complex and we can’t solve them today, we can take the first step in resolving them. There isn’t anything we can’t figure out and if we need to we can take the issue apart a little at a time until we’ve found all the answers. If we don’t hide from it, if we look at everything objectively, and we start moving forward through the problem we will solve it. And then we can shake it off and continue on. When we solve our problems we leave them behind. We don’t have to carry them or waste precious energy ignoring them. We can be strong as steel in our lives if we face things head on and endure whatever discomfort we must to get through. We can do anything. We aren’t going to face anything that is too difficult or too hard for us to overcome. We have everything we need right now to face whatever comes.

Today if you feel overwhelmed by an issue pressing on you, and you don’t want to face it, look at it completely. You are intelligent and capable and no matter what the problem is, you will solve it. You have everything you need to find the answers and move forward. You are strong and capable. There isn’t anything that will overcome you. You’re like steel and nothing will break you. You have everything you need. Go forward. The answers are there.
