One Small Victory

8 Jun

We can do anything we want to do. We can live our lives any way we want and go anywhere. If we’re happy, we can keep things the way they are, or if we’re not happy, can change anything we like. Change is always possible but it won’t just happen because we want it. We have to stop doing something and start doing something else. It sounds easy but it isn’t always simple. Changing our behaviors takes diligence and constancy. If we really want to change, we have to dedicate ourselves to the new behavior and stick to it, over and over again, until it replaces the behavior we want to lose. Deciding we want to change is only the first step. After we’ve made the decision, the work must begin. It will take focus and time, and like turning a ship, instead of taking one big step that changes everything, we may have to take many small steps to get to success. Today we may make one decision that brings us one small victory that moves us closer to the destination. If we want to lose weight, today we may turn down a second helping. If we want to be more fit, we might take the stairs today instead of the elevator. Small victories may seem insignificant when looking at the big picture, but they add up and bring us greater confidence to do even more. Every step forward, no matter how small, is a win. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and change won’t happen overnight, but with diligence and focus, we can do anything. One small step forward each day will take us to success. Nothing is too difficult for us to accomplish, and with persistence and determination, we can have the lives we want the most.

Learning a foreign language takes a lot of effort. We must learn a new vocabulary, figure out how to put together sentences, and pronounce new words. Even if we’re highly motivated and intensely interested, fluency won’t happen quickly. It will require hours of dedicated practice, and patience. Today we may only memorize a few new words and just begin to understand the correct syntax, but tomorrow we’ll do a little more, and in time, if we stick to it, we’ll succeed. Each small step will take us closer to the goal, and we will reach success.

The road to some destinations is short and we can reach them quickly. It’s nice to claim the prize at the end, and we all want to succeed. But some roads are long, and difficult, and take more time than we imagined at the beginning. If the goal is important, we can stay the course and trust ourselves to prevail. If not, we can let it go, and work on something else. We decide what we’ll accomplish and what we want to do. When we’re focused on something we desire, every single movement in the right direction takes us closer to the goal. Some days we’ll go far.  Other days, it may seem we’re standing still, but as long as we stay on the road, we are winning.

Today if you’re working toward a goal but it seems you can only move a tiny bit closer each day, trust yourself. Every step ahead, no matter how small, is a victory that moves you forward. You are amazing and can accomplish anything. Be confident and keep your eyes focused on the road ahead. Nothing is beyond your reach, and every step takes you closer. Stay on course, and you will succeed.
